How to choose a wax seal kit

Pick the design

An initial is the most personal choice, a motif such as a sun and moon or a tree of life suits a theme, and a phrase such as You’re Invited or Always and Forever says what is inside. The Yoption set gives you six heads for one handle, which is useful if you also want seals for thank-you notes. Stamps made to order with your names or date exist too, but allow extra time for delivery.

Check the size

A seal of about 1 inch suits most invitation envelopes and pocket folds. Three of the four stamps list a head of about that size: the Yoption and YOLAKIS at about 1 inch and the SWANGSA at 30 mm. The CHUHUAYUAN listing does not give a size. A bigger seal uses more wax and stands taller on the envelope.

What comes in the box

  • Stamp only: the Yoption set has no wax, spoon or candle, so add beads, such as the Andotopee refill, and a melting spoon.
  • Stamp and wax: the YOLAKIS and SWANGSA kits include 200 beads in 10 colors; the SWANGSA kit adds a spoon, a candle and a pen. The YOLAKIS kit has no spoon or candle, so add both.
  • Everything: the CHUHUAYUAN box adds a warmer, tweezers, tea candles and metallic pens for highlighting the raised design.

Choose the wax color

Match one color from your invitation, or use a metallic. Beads let you mix two colors in the spoon for a marbled seal. Order a refill in your main color so every invitation matches.

How much wax you need

The SWANGSA instructions use 2 or 3 beads per seal, and the Andotopee listing says 3 to 5 beads make 1 to 2 seals. Going by those figures, 200 beads make roughly 40 to 130 seals, depending on size. For 100 invitations, plus menus or favor tags and a few practice seals, a 200-bead kit alone may not be enough; add a refill such as the 600-bead Andotopee bag.

How to make a wax seal

  1. Practice on scrap card first.
  2. Melt a few beads in the spoon over a tea light, or in a warmer.
  3. Pour a small pool, about the size of the stamp, where the seal will go.
  4. Wait a few seconds, then press the stamp straight down and hold it.
  5. Lift it straight up once the wax has cooled. The SWANGSA instructions say to wait until it is completely cool.

Make the seals well before the mailing date. Invitations are commonly mailed six to eight weeks before the wedding (earlier for a destination wedding), so give yourself an evening or two before that.

Mailing wax-sealed invitations

Wax on the outside of an envelope can crack or catch in postal sorting machines. Many couples put the seal on the invitation itself, on a second envelope tucked inside the mailing one, or on a paper band wrapped around the invitation, and mail it in a plain outer envelope. If the seal is on the outside, take one sealed invitation to the post office before you mail them all: lumpy envelopes can need extra postage (the post office calls them non-machinable) and may need to be stamped by hand at the counter. None of these listings claim a flexible, mail-safe wax.

Common questions

What size wax seal stamp is best for wedding invitations?

About 1 inch suits most invitation envelopes and folds. Three of the four stamps here list a head of about that size; the CHUHUAYUAN listing does not give one.

Can you mail wedding invitations with wax seals?

Yes, with care. Seals on the outside can crack in sorting machines, so many couples seal the inner envelope or the invitation and use a plain outer envelope. Take one sealed invitation to the post office and ask about extra postage and hand stamping.

How many wax beads make one seal?

About 2 to 5, depending on the size of the seal. The SWANGSA instructions use 2 or 3; the Andotopee listing says 3 to 5 beads make 1 to 2 seals.

Do I need a wax warmer?

No. A melting spoon over a tea light works, and the SWANGSA kit includes a spoon and a candle. A warmer, like the one in the CHUHUAYUAN kit, is convenient for a long batch.
