What you give up is the fitting room, so the guidance below matters more than it would in a boutique.
The practical approach is to order early, order by your measurements against the seller’s chart (size up if you are between sizes), and budget for a local tailor. A seamstress can take a gown in, but letting one out is limited by the seam allowance.
